UBC alumnus Dr. Robert Mundell was awarded the 1999 Bank of Sweden
Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory
of Alfred Nobel for his work in the
comparative economics of fixed and
flexible exchange rates. His analysis
of the benefits from two or more
countries sharing a common
currency provided the framework that led to the adoption of the
Euro in 1999.
Indira Samarasekera became the Vice-President of Research for the university.
Robert Tierney assumed the position
of Dean of Education.
Allan Tully assumed the position of
Dean of Arts.
Four UBC faculty members were elected to the Royal Society of Canada in 1999:
Rabab Ward, a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Psychology Professor Stanley Coren, and Earth and Ocean Sciences adjunct professors Kenneth Denman and Chi Shing Wong.
Zoology Professor Peter Hochachka,
former UBC chancellor Robert Lee, opera star alumnus Ben Heppner, and the choral director of UBC's largest choir, Diane Loomer, were named to the Order of Canada in 1999.
Teaching excellence was recognized
with 22 faculty members receiving
UBC's highest honour -- the Killam Teaching Prize.
Five UBC faculty and staff members
were recognized for outstanding service with President's Service Awards for Excellence: Donna Chin of Canadian Literature, the Faculty of Dentistry's
Elaine Liau, Zoology Professor
David Holm, George McLaughlin of
Plant Operations, and Gayle Smith of the Office of the VP Academic and Provost.
