Service And Volunteerism
Many UBC faculty and staff members make a significant
contribution to the community, giving generously of their time to various non-profit organizations.
Of the UBC faculty and staff who participated in a recent survey,
74 per cent indicated that they participate in unpaid voluntary
community service activities. (Approximately 781 people responded to the survey.)
According to the survey, UBC faculty and staff members
contributed more than 82,805 hours to a range of organizations
in the community over the past year. Close to half of the
respondents offered their professional expertise as part of their community service activities.

According to the National Survey of Giving, Volunteering and Participating (NSGVP), 48 per cent of British Columbians with
a university degree volunteered in the community, making
them more likely to contribute their time than any other group. Almost a quarter of British Columbians with less than a high school diploma volunteered.
