Bentley Centre for Business Education. Dr. Peter J.G. Bentley, O.C., donated $1 million toward UBC's Robson Square campus. This gift will help provide professionals, lifelong learners and other community members with a vital learning environment and a gateway to UBC's resources. Dr. Bentley is Chairman of Canfor Corporation, and a longstanding member of the Sauder School of Business Faculty Advisory Board. He received an honorary Doctorate of Laws from UBC in 1992.

UBC and Camp Goodtimes. The beautiful Loon Lake Research and Education Centre in UBC's Malcolm Knapp Research Forest near Maple Ridge is the new home to the Canadian Cancer Society's Camp Goodtimes, a special camp for children with a history of cancer. The 5,000-hectare forest area is managed by UBC's Faculty of Forestry.

Alumni of Distinction: Maurice Danby Copithorne. The UBC Alumni Association awarded Maurice Copithorne, Q.C., (BA '54, LLB '55, LLD '02) its 2003 Alumni Award of Distinction. Copithorne, a long-time UBC donor and recent patron of the Hong Kong branch of the alumni association, had a distinguished 30-year career as a diplomat and lawyer. Among other things, he helped establish Canada's embassy in China, was ambassador to Austria and Canadian commissioner in Hong Kong.

UBC and Alumni strengthen ties. On May 10, UBC Board of Governors Chair John Reid and Alumni Association Chair Jane Hungerford signed an historic agreement aimed at strengthening services to alumni. The agreement will see UBC create an associate vice president position for alumni affairs, and establish a new alumni relations unit to work hand-in-hand with the UBC Alumni Association.

A Winning Spirit

UBC Thunderbirds won five national championships this year -- more than any other school -- including the first women's national basketball title in 30 years.

The basketball team was led to victory by co-captains Carrie Watson and Sheila Townsend, also co-recipients of the first Mary Campbell Athletics Award.

In 1930 at the age of 19, Mary Campbell led the UBC women's basketball team on a 17-day trip by train and ship from Vancouver to Prague to represent UBC and Canada at the Women's International Games. In a stunning show of perseverance against France, Miss Campbell and her team brought the World Championship home to Canada and international fame to UBC.
