UBC materials engineering students win awards at COM 2008

UBC materials engineers have won two awards at the annual Conference of Metallurgists Awards Banquet held in Winnipeg.

Feng Xie, materials engineering Ph.D. student, won the Gordon M. Ritchey Award for outstanding scholarship in hydrometallurgy.

Jason Mitchell, materials engineering Ph.D. student and Prof. Steven Cockcroft, School of Engineering, won the Light Metals Best Paper Award for Determination of strain during hot tearing in aluminum alloys by digital image correlation.

UBC professor applies model to salmonella bacteria

UBC's Michael Doebeli and researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zuric, have applied a mathematical model to salmonella bacteria to show how they can evolve in biological populations and result in stronger and more damaging infections.

UBC Fisheries Centre hosts fishprinting lecture and workshop

The UBC Fisheries Centre will host its second annual fishprinting or "gyotaku" lecture and workshop, given by Mineo Ryuka Yamamoto, master fishprinter from Japan.
Yamamoto will present a lecture on the history of gyotaku followed by a demonstration of gyotaku by Hidekazu Tojo, owner of Tojo's Restaurant. The workshop will instruct participants on fishprinting on silk or their own fabric.

Applications for Leave for Change Program now open

UBC staff members wishing to apply for the Leave for Change program are encouraged to do so by September 12, 2008.

The Leave for Change program is a new partnership between UBC and Uniterra, an international development organization that provides overseas volunteer positions to UBC staff during their vacation time.

Course offered on indigenous experience

UBC's Division of Aboriginal Peoples Health, Department of Family Practice is offering an Interprofessional Health and Human Service (IHHS) course in January in health and human service programs as well as First Nations Studies.

The course provides an opportunity to understand the indigenous experience of colonization by having students work with colleagues engaged in disciplines of public health, history, sociology and public policy.

To celebrate UBC’s Centenary and the opening of the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, UBC Library is offering B.C. residents a free community borrower card from now until December 15, 2008.

The community borrower card allows in-person borrowing of books from any UBC Library branch, including UBC Robson Square and UBC Okanagan.
