Explorations in the Great Basin at the Botanical Garden

Brent Hine, Curator of the E.H. Lohbrunner Alpine Garden at UBC’s Botanical Garden, will give a free seminar entitled Explorations in the Great Basin. Hine recently completed a seed-collecting trip in the Great Basin and intermountain region in the states of Nevada, Oregon and Washington, a dry-land region between western North America’s coastal mountains and the western Rockies. A new garden feature, the ‘Intermountain Habitat,’ will present this unique flora.

The seminar will take place from 12 - 1 p.m. on Jan. 28 at the UBC Botanical Garden, 6804 SW Marine Dr. Weather permitting, the lecture will be followed by a tour of the Alpine Garden.

Faculty of Dentistry to host Research Day

UBC’s Faculty of Dentistry will host its first Research Day on Jan. 29 for dentistry faculty, students and staff. The theme is Implants: From basic science of tissue destruction to predictable esthetic implant placement.

Talk on classical texts for women

UBC’s Centre for Japanese Research will host a lecture on Illustrated Classical Texts for Women in the Edo Period, presented by Prof. Joshua Mostow, Department of Asian Studies. The lecture will take place on Jan. 25 from 5 – 6:30 p.m. in Room 120 of the C.K. Choi Building, 1855 West Mall.

New mural on display at Koerner Library

A new piece of art from a B.C. artist is now on display at Koerner Library. Althea Thauberger’s photographic mural, The Art of Seeing Without Being Seen, was recently installed on the ground floor of Koerner Library.

This mural features members of the Canadian military recreating a training exercise on a site located south of Chilliwack, meant to approximate an Afghan village. The Art of Seeing Without Being Seen is a catch-phrase used to describe the role of reconnaissance within the military.

The work is accompanied by handouts and a comments book where viewers are invited to share their thoughts. For more information on Thauberger’s work, visit www.altheathauberger.ca.

Thauberger’s mural is part of the exhibition Exponential Future, on display at the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery from Jan.18 - Apr. 27. The opening reception for this exhibition is this evening, Jan. 24, from 8 - 10 p.m.
