UBC community members receive the Order of Canada

In December, three UBC community members were appointed to the Order of Canada.

• Assoc. Prof. Bruce Pullan, School of Music, was made a Member in recognition of his contributions to the development of singers of all ages and as a professor of music and founder and director of numerous choirs.
• Senior Assoc. Dean Frieda Granot, Sauder School of Business, was made a Member in recognition of her contributions as a leader, role model and catalyst for change in university administration and graduate studies.
• Alumnus Jeff Wall, already a Member, was made an Officer in recognition of his contributions as an influential art photographer and mentorship of young artists.

They will be invited to accept their insignia at a ceremony later this year from Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada.

UBC professor receives international award

Assoc. Prof. Robert Schober, Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been awarded a Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

This award is given to internationally renowned scientists and scholars from abroad in recognition of their past research and future promise. As part of the award, Schober will spend six months at the University of Erlangen-Nuernberg to research ultra-wideband and multiple-input multiple-output communications systems.

UBC professor recognized as Educator of the Year

Clinical Prof. Galt Wilson, Northern Medical Program Clerkship Director in UBC’s Faculty of Medicine, was awarded the title of Health and Wellness Educator of the Year at the “A Healthier You” Expo in Prince George last November. The award recognizes Wilson’s contribution to health and wellness education for healthcare providers, health care students and citizens of Northern B.C.

The Expo brought together government and community decision-makers, educators, business and healthcare professionals and the community at large with a vision to provide an educational platform for traditional and holistic forms of health to improve quality of life.

2008 CCAE Prix D’Excellence award competition is open

The Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education (CCAE) has launched their annual Prix D’Excellence award competition, recognizing achievement in alumni affairs, public affairs, development, student recruitment and overall institutional advancement. The deadline for submissions is March 7, 2008.

Social policy research travel award opportunity

Undergraduate and graduate UBC students working on social policy research are invited to apply for Social Policy Research Conference Travel Awards of up to $1,500. Eligible students must be the first author and presenter at a local, national or international conference, and be able to make a research product publicly available (e.g. a research paper, survey, presentation). At least 20 of these awards will be granted in the 2007-08 academic year.

These funds were awarded to UBC from the B.C. Ministry of Labour and Citizen’s Services through the Cross Government Research, Policy and Practice Branch. For an application form and terms of reference, visit www.research.ubc.ca.

Nominations open for student development awards

The Campus Advisory Board on Student Development invites nominations from UBC students, faculty and staff for the 2007/08 UBC Student Development Awards in recognition of contributions or significant improvements to the student experience and learning environment at UBC.  Various categories of awards are available. The deadline for nominations is Feb. 15.

UBC Film wins at St. Louis film festival

The Saddest Boy In The World, a film by UBC Film Production alumni Jamie Travis (director/writer/production designer), Amy Belling (cinematographer/producer) and A.J. Bond (associate producer) won Best Live Action at December’s AT&T St. Louis International Film Festival. This win makes the film eligible for Academy Award consideration, as the festival is accredited by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Alumnus recognized as educator

UBC alumnus Martin Aller-Stead was recently named the Best Secondary School Teacher in Ontario, an annual award given through the Ontario Teachers Insurance Plan. Aller-Stead currently works as a Senior Level/Co-operative Education teacher at Monarch Park Collegiate in Toronto.

Unruly Salon series opens with Unleased and Unruly

UBC’s Faculty of Education opens the first salon in its Unruly Salon speaker series on Jan. 12 with Unleased and Unruly: Staking Our Claims to Place, Space and Culture. The evening will include poetry, a film screening and dance, followed by a discussion and reception.

The series, made up of seven performances by scholars and/or artists with disabilities from the visual, performing and musical art sectors, aims to increase awareness about disability arts and the significant cultural contribution of disabled Canadians.

The series is free, open to the public and will take place at UBC’s Green College, 6201 Cecil Green Park Road All salons will be intimate and require pre-registration. For more information and to pre-register, visit www.unrulysalon.com.

Death Valley photos at the Botanical Garden

UBC’s Botanical Garden will host a lunchtime slideshow of California’s Death Valley National Park, home to at least 346 species of birds, six species of fish and 1,000 species of plants.

The lecture will take place from 12 - 1 p.m. on Jan. 14 at the Botanical Garden Reception Centre at 6804 SW Marine Dr. Guests are invited to bring a bag lunch; coffee and tea are supplied. Cost is $5.

Exponential Future opens at the Belkin Gallery as a centenary event

UBC’s Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery announces the upcoming exhibition Exponential Future, featuring eight young Vancouver artists whose work is shown internationally. Among the artists are UBC Fine Arts alumnus Tim Lee and several Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design graduates.

The show runs from Jan. 18 – Apr. 27, with an opening reception on Jan. 24 as one of the first UBC Centenary events. The exhibition is sponsored by The Audain Foundation, VANOC’s Cultural Olympiad and The Canada Council for the Arts.

Centre hosts lectures on Korean photography and gender and mission encounters

UBC’s Centre for Korean Research will host a lecture on Jan. 10 on The History of Photography in Modern Korea, 1871-1953, given by Dr. Hyung Gu Lynn, AECL/KEPCO Chair in Korean Research at UBC’s Institute of Asian Research.

On Jan. 17, a second lecture will given by Assoc. Prof. Hyaeweol Choi, Korean Studies at Arizona State University, on The Lure and Danger of the Public Sphere: Gender and Mission Encounters in Korea. 

The lectures will take place on from 4 - 5:30 p.m. in Room 120 at the C.K. Choi Building, 1855 West Mall.
