UBC’s AGM to take place on Nov. 26

UBC’s 2007 Annual General Meeting will take place on Monday, Nov. 26 at the Rotary Arts Centre in Kelowna. The AGM will be webcast live from Noon to 1 p.m. at www.ubc.ca. The webcast will be archived and available for viewing after the event.

The live webcast can also be viewed in a theatre setting at two campus locations.

The AGM will conclude with a Q&A session: questions for the President and Vice Presidents can be e-mailed in advance to agm.questions@ubc.ca. Questions unanswered due to time constraints will receive responses after the AGM.

The event will mark the release of the 2006-07 UBC Annual Report, which celebrates the past year’s accomplishments and, with the theme of Foresight, anticipates our upcoming celebration of the centenary of the University Act of 1908.

UBC elections for Chancellor, Board and Senate

UBC is conducting elections for its 17th Chancellor, as well as faculty and staff representatives to the Board of Governors, and representatives to the Okanagan and Vancouver Senates. Voting ends Nov. 26.

UBC’s Sprouts receives entrepreneurship award

Sprouts Natural Food Co-operative – a student-run, not-for-profit, organic grocery store, food co-op and education centre – was awarded the oikos Award for Student Entrepreneurship in Higher Education earlier this month. Alice Miro, a UBC alumna, arrived in Germany this week to accept the award for her work with Sprouts.

UBC professor appointed inaugural director for institute at St. Paul’s Hospital

Prof. Bruce McManus, of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, has been appointed the inaugural Director of the Providence Heart + Lung Institute at St. Paul’s Hospital (Providence Health Care). Launched in June 2007, the Providence Heart + Lung Institute integrates all of Providence’s heart and lung research, education and care programs under one umbrella.

McManus is Co-Director of the iCAPTURE Centre at St. Paul’s, and recently completed a six-year appointment as Scientific Director of the Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health. He serves St. Paul’s Hospital as Academic Head of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.

Team UBC teen innovators in Shad Valley program honoured for Zero-Waste innovations

In July 2007, UBC was one of 11 university hosts of the Shad Valley program, a residential entrepreneurship program for senior high school students. Prof. Martin Adamson, of the Department of Zoology, and Lynn Norman, Sessional Lecturer in Zoology, headed the staffing team of UBC staff and students, and faculty from other universities. Students participated in four weeks of lectures, workshops, field trips and project assignments.

Last month, students from the UBC-hosted program were awarded Best Application of the Zero-Waste Technology theme and Best Website at the RBC/Shad Entrepreneurship Cup awards for their innovation ShowerDrop – a shampoo and conditioner dispensing method for the hotel industry that eliminates the use of plastic bottles.

UBC staff seasonal concert reminder

UBC’s seasonal concert for faculty and staff will be held Nov. 28 from 11:45 a.m.- 12:45 p.m. at the Chan Centre for Performing Arts. Produced by the UBC Ceremonies and Events Office with the School of Music and sponsored by the Department of Human Resources, this free concert showcases a variety of music performed by UBC School of Music students.

Last-minute tickets may be picked up the day of the concert. For day-of tickets, visit the Chan Centre Ticket Office on Nov. 28 between 10 a.m.- 11:45 a.m.
