Susan Harper from Civil Engineering has been awarded the President's Environmental Award. Colleagues Helmet Prion, Alan Russell, and Harald Schrempp were also recognized for their contributions within the department.

The award is given annually to recognize the exceptional efforts of UBC employees who make environmental awareness and protection a fundamental part of their daily duties.

Harper's initiatives include assisting and educating peers about waste disposal, emergency preparedness and occupational safety, and organizing department training opportunities such as a "Safety Day."

Jean Hsieh and Charles Ramey have been named as the first recipients of the Faculty of Medicine Staff Distinguished Service Award.

The award is made to individuals who have made a broad contribution to the faculty and applied innovation, creativity, sensitivity and imagination to their work.

Hsieh has worked in the School of Rehabilitation Sciences since 1977 and is currently a clinical secretary. Ramey is the director, Administration, in the Dept. of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and has worked in the department since 1973.

Julie Stockton has been appointed director of Organizational Training and Development in Human Resources.

Stockton will provide guidance in the design and implementation of training and organizational development projects and activities, and leadership in the areas of strategic planning and other techniques which support organizational change.

Formerly a human resource specialist at Vancouver Hospital and Health Sciences Centre and York University, Stockton is working on her doctorate in educational leadership at Simon Fraser University.

Commerce Prof. Bill Waters has been appointed to a five-person panel conducting a comprehensive review of the Canada Transportation Act and related legislation.

The panel will consider ways to increase competition in the railway sector along with a host of other transportation industry issues including air transport regulation, and accountability and regulation of airport and port authorities.

Waters is director of UBC's Centre for Transportation Studies.

The panel is expected to submit a final report by next July.
