Support science fairs

A 5-kilometre fun run Sunday, Sept. 24 along the False Creek seawall will raise money to support young B.C. scientists and future innovators. Start time for the first annual PMC-Sierra Science Fair Fun Run is 9 a.m. at Science World.

All proceeds from the run go to the Dr. Michael Smith Science Fair Endowment which supports the promotion and development of Science Fair programs throughout the province. UBC is among the sponsors for the event.

Entry forms and race details are available at Running Room locations in the Lower Mainland or atwww.sciencefairs.bc.ca.

When your dream plant comes home

Even if you have a black thumb and inhabit a dingy apartment or office you are certain to find the ideal plant at UBC's Friends of the Garden (FOGs) 23rd Annual Indoor Plant Sale. Thousands of plants, ranging in price from $1 to $60, will be on sale at the Botanical Garden, Sept. 14-16, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Originally intended to provide students with plants for their rooms and introduce them to UBC gardens, the event has grown into the largest indoor plant sale in Canada.

The public is invited and internal university requisitions are welcome. FOGs are volunteers who maintain, enhance and promote UBC gardens. As always at their fundraisers, expert advice is available.

The Botanical Garden is at 6804 Southwest Marine Drive. Free parking is available. Call 604-822-3928 for more information.

Dish up a discount

Campus food service outlets will give patrons a 15-cent discount per transaction if they bring and use their own reusable mug or dish. Dubbed the WasteFree UBC campaign, the initiative is intended to reduce the amount of waste generated university-wide. It is the brainchild of UBC's Sustainability Office, the Student Environment Centre, Waste Management, Food Services and the Alma Mater Society.

"With a daily `WasteFree' coffee and lunch on campus, you would save close to $60 a year," says the Sustainability Office's Sean Pander.

Pander says the campaign is aimed at reducing the use of disposable containers which make p to 40 per cent of the waste at campus food service outlets.

According to Waste Management, UBC generates 12 tonnes of garbage daily-- enough to 14,300 cars a year.
