Physics Prof Recognized for Career Achievement

Walter Hardy, a UBC physics professor, has received the Chairman’s Award for Career Achievement from the BC Innovation Council.

The award recognizes individuals who have made important and sustained contributions to innovative science or technology throughout their careers.

UBC Community Studio Students Recognized

UBC’s Community Studio will receive the American Society of Landscape Architect’s Community Service Award during the society’s annual meeting and expo in October.

The studio is a student-initiated, student-run design outreach group that has been providing design services and assistance to community groups and non-profit organizations.

Professor Receives Award of Excellence

Scott Hinch, a UBC forest sciences professor, received the American Fisheries Society's Award of Excellence at the society's annual meeting in Anchorage this past September.

The award recognizes a singular accomplishment of an individual or group acting as a team or committee for contributions in fisheries management and research.

Hinch’s team, which includes Mike Healey (IRES), Steve Cooke (Centre for Applied Conservation Research) and Tony Farrell (Zoology), was awarded for their efforts in the study of salmon migrations, behaviour and physiology, and the application of their findings to aid in management.

Pam Ratner Appointed to the College of Registered Nurses

Pam Ratner, a UBC nursing professor and coordinator of the PhD program at the School of Nursing, has been appointed to the Board of the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia (CRNBC).

The CRNBC recently evolved from the Registered Nurses Association of British Columbia with an expanded mandate to include nurse practitioners, a new category of health care professionals in British Columbia.

UBC Graduates Win B.C. Scholarships

Timothy Kay Yeung Kaan, a UBC pharmacology graduate, has won the $60,000 Queen Elizabeth II British Columbia Centennial scholarship to pursue his doctoral studies in neuroscience at King’s College London in England.

Sean Starke, another UBC graduate, was awarded one of two $5,000 scholarships to pursue a master’s degree in English literature at Oxford University.

The Queen Elizabeth II British Columbia Centennial Scholarship program helps support B.C. students pursuing their post-graduate studies in other Commonwealth countries. There are three Queen Elizabeth II scholarships available each year.

UBC Student Wins Art Competition

Kyle Dickau has been recognized as one of Canada’s best graduating artists.

Dickau was selected as a regional winner at this year’s Bank of Montreal’s 1st Art! Invitational Student Competition.

Regional winners each receive $1,000 for their submission and have their work displayed in BMO offices from coast to coast.

The UBC People Plan project team is asking for feedback on its discussion paper, with the goal of establishing the best people practices at the university.
