Education Profs Receive Honorary Degrees From U of Umea

The University of Umea, Sweden, presented UBC Education and Counselling Psychology professors Norm Amundson and Bill Borgen with honorary doctorates in October 2005.

The honorary degrees are in recognition of the impact the professors’ research has had on the development of Counsellor Education in Scandinavia.

Four Engineering Profs Recognized for Excellence

The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C. (ASPEGBC) honoured four UBC engineering professors for excellence in professional, technical and community service on October 14, 2005.

G. Ward Wilson, Prof. of Mining Engineering and Chair of Mining and the Environment, has received the R.A. McLachlan Memorial Award—APEGBC’s highest honour for a professional engineer.

Nimal Rajapakse, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, was presented with the Meritorious Achievement Award for his work in mechanical engineering.

Elizabeth Croft, Assoc. Prof. of Mechanical Engineering, has received the Professional Service Award for her efforts to increase both the number of women engineering graduates and the percentage of women working as professional mechanical and electrical engineers.

Kevin Smith, Head of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, was presented with the Award for Teaching Excellence.

UBC Engineers in Dec. 2 CKNW Orphans Fund Telethon

For the second year, the UBC Engineering Undergraduate Society (EUS) will participate in the CKNW Orphans Fund Telethon on December 2.

From 1:00-3:00 p.m, EUS members will answer pledge line phones at the radio station’s annual telethon to raise money for B.C. children. At the event, EUS Sports and Charity Representative Nicole Pesch will speak in an on air interview about the society’s recent Pie in the Face Fundraiser.
