Health Researcher HeRRO Appears on Campus
A new resource for health researchers on campus will be officially
launched on September 29.
Called the Health Research Resource Office (HeRRO), the facility
houses a centralized network of support personnel for internal review,
web-based communication, core facilities management, funding support
and grants facilitation.
Established to foster and promote the formation and building of
new multidisciplinary health research teams at UBC and its affiliated
institutions, HeRRO will also serve as a catalyst to submitting
more applications for CIHR’s strategic initiatives programs
and other peer-reviewed grants competitions.
HeRRO is a division of the Office of the Vice President, Research
and maintains close ties with the Office of Research Services. Funding
for HeRRO is provided by the MSFHR Institutional Infrastructure
Program.

Retiring First Nations Coordinator to be Honoured
Gordon Prest, the first full-time First Nations forestry coordinator
in a Canadian university, is retiring September 27, 2004 with a
celebration of his achievements held by the Faculty of Forestry.
Prest, Coast Salish from the Sto:lo Nation, developed the highly
successful First Nations Strategy, which aims to increase the number
of First Nations students graduating from the Faculty and to develop
new courses relating specifically to First Nations issues and aboriginal
rights.
He spearheaded the development of the First Nations forestry camp
at the UBC Malcolm Knapp Research Forest. The camp is designed to
introduce Aboriginal youth to Forestry and give them an idea of
what life at a university is all about. Students also learn the
practical use of science and math in professional natural resource
management.
Gordon worked for 25 years with the British Columbia Ministry of
Forests as a forest ranger and rose to forest operations manager
throughout the province of BC.
