Financial Community to Get Preview of New Research
in High-Tech Sector
On Tuesday, June 15, UBC will host an event to profile current
and future research that will continue to propel growth in B.C.’s
high-tech sector. Targeted specifically for the local business and
financial community, it will showcase research projects that have
helped triple the amount of research funding at UBC to $377 million
in areas such as clean energy, artificial blood, and proteomics.
The event is sponsored by Discovery Parks, GrowthWorks, Richards
Buell Sutton, and supported by BC Biotech.

UBC Students Chosen to Represent Vancouver in
Beijing
Bruce Krayenhoff and Pamela Lyn, both students at UBC, have won
first and second prize in the university students (non-heritage)
category of the B.C. Mandarin Speech Contest, co-sponsored by the
Chinese Consulate in Vancouver and the Department of Asian Studies.
Krayenoff has won a one-year scholarship to study Chinese in China,
while Lyn has won a scholarship to a summer program in China. They
have been selected to represent Vancouver in Beijing, China, this
August at the International Chinese Bridge Mandarin Speech Contest.

Human Kinetics Prof Earns Michael Smith Research
Award
Darren Warburton, assistant professor in human kinetics, has been
awarded a Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research Scholar Award.
The MSFHR Scholar Award “gives promising researchers the opportunity
to demonstrate their ability to initiate and conduct independent
research.” Warburton won the award for his project titled
The Link Between Cardiovascular And Bone Health: A Randomized Controlled
Trial Of Statins And Exercise Rehabilitation In Post-Menopausal
Women . Warburton has previously received the Peter Wall Institute
for Advanced Studies Early Career Scholar Award.

Human Kinetics Gets New School Director
Associate professor Robert Sparks has been appointed Director of
the School of Human Kinetics (HKIN). A well-known member of the
school, Sparks specializes in leisure and sport management, with
an emphasis in media studies, consumer culture, sport marketing
and communication.
The School of Human Kinetics offers a wide array of courses to
over 700 undergraduate HKIN students. Courses range from cellular
to societal levels, providing students with both the specialization
and breadth required to tackle complex human kinetics challenges.

UBC Bookstore Director Becomes National Association
President
Debbie Harvie, director of the UBC Bookstore, has been installed
as president-elect on the board of the National Association of College
Stores (NACS). NACS is the North American professional trade association
representing the more than $11.12 billion higher education retailing
industry.
As a trustee, Harvie will help provide governance for the association’s
more than 4,000 members and will assist the organization in its
mission of enhancing college stores through education, advocacy
and the utilization of new technologies.
Headquartered in Oberlin, Ohio, NACS represents more than 3,000
collegiate retailers and about 1,000 associate members who supply
books and other products to college and university stores. NACS
member stores daily serve the majority of North America’s
15.8 million university students while supporting the academic missions
of higher education institutions everywhere. Additional information

Dancers of the Damelahamid to Perform at UBC Longhouse
On June 19, 2004, from 6 - 8 p.m. the Dancers of Damelahamid will
be performing at the UBC First Nations House of Learning. The group
will perform coastal dances from the Gitksan Nation. Admission is
free.
