UBC human sciences researchers gain more than
$6 million in federal funding
Social sciences and humanities researchers at UBC have gained $5.3
million in funding in Standard Research Grants and $950,000 through
the Initiative on the New Economy research grants, both programs
of the Social Sciences and Research Council of Canada.
The funding will support 71 UBC projects that ranges from a study
of social phobia to a history and analysis of Canadians and adoption.
The UBC funding was part of a $73 million federal investment in
social, economic and cultural research projects. B.C. universities
gained $10.5 million to conduct 114 projects.

Six UBC women nominated for YWCA Women of Distinction
awards
UBC staff, faculty and students have been nominated for the 2003
YWCA women of distinction awards. They are:
- Dr. Joanna Bates, senior associate dean, Faculty of Medicine
- Assoc. Prof. Karen Meyer, director, Centre for the Study of
Curriculum and Instruction
- Nichola Hall, director, Arts, Humanities and Public Affairs,
UBC's
- Continuing Studies Dept.
- Prof. Gail Bellward., associate dean, Grad Studies and Research,
- Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences
- Yaa-Hemaa Obiri-Yeboah, Faculty of Arts student and 2003 Rhodes
Scholar
- Elaine Chong, Doctor of Pharmacy student, Faculty of Pharmaceutical
Sciences.

Botanical Garden's Popular Perennial Sale Slated
for Mother's Day
UBC's 13th Annual Perennial Plant Sale takes place on Sunday,
May 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Take Mom on a tour of the UBC Botanical
Gardens, or select a gift from more than 10,000 choice plants grown
by the Friends of the Garden, as well as some special treasures
from the UBC Nursery.
Canadian Gardener David Tarrant and author Judy Newton will be
on hand to give gardening advice, and there will be a children's
corner for young green thumbs. Admission is free.
The sale is the garden's major annual fundraiser. For additional

2003 CABSD award winners honoured
This year's CABSD award winners were honoured in a ceremony in
the Chapman Learning Commons on April 30.
Four members of the UBC campus community were named recipients
of the Margaret Fulton Award recognizing individuals on campus who
have made a significant contribution to student's lives.
Student Health Service nurse Debbie Aikens, AMS Safety Coordinator
Sue Brown, Chapman Learning Commons student development officer
Margot Bell, and the outgoing co-chairs of the Community Health
Initiative for University Students (CHIUS), Kristi Mardyn and David
Hui were named recipients of the Margaret Fulton Award. The award
recognizes individuals on campus who have made a significant contribution
to students' lives.
The Faculty of Medicine's Rural and Underserved Community Practice
Program received the Peter Larkin Award for a graduate or post baccalaureate
program. The program has been sending medical students to rural
and underserved communities for 26 years to give them a taste for
medicine in the field.
The Alfred Scow Award for an undergraduate program or department
went to the Integrated Sciences Program and Faculty of Arts' First
Nations Languages Program. The Helen MaCrae Award recognizing outstanding
AMS/GSS/UBC Student Services went to the AMS Ombuds Office and Student
Exchange Program. CABSD awards recognize exceptional contributions
or significant improvements to student experience and learning.
Established in 1998, the awards are named for former members of
the university community who made major contributions to student
life. Nominations for the awards were made by students, faculty
and staff. Winners were selected by the CABSD which includes representatives
from across campus.

Distinguished University Scholars program launched
UBC has named its first 18 Distinguished University Scholars,
under a new Chairs program that recognizes exceptional faculty members
who have distinguished themselves as scholars in research and/or
teaching and learning.
The five-year, renewable Chair appointments are intended to retain
scholars of excellence - scholars acknowledged by their peers to
have achieved international recognition as leaders, or having the
potential to be such leaders, in their specific fields. For each
year that a person occupies a Chair, he or she receives $20,000
plus the designation of Distinguished University Scholar.
Criteria for being awarded a Chair include:
- international recognition as leaders in their field;
- a superior record in attracting and supervising students and
trainees;
- an innovative, original and high quality proposed scholarly
program
- integration of the scholar's work with their faculty's strategic
scholarly priorities.
