UBC holds first aboriginal forestry camp

UBC is holding a First Nations summer camp to demystify the role of natural resource managers and professional foresters.

The Summer Forestry Camp for First Nations Youth, from August 4-10, 2003, is an initiative of the Faculty of Forestry and is a first among Canadian professional forestry schools. Twenty-five First Nations youth in grades eight and nine have been selected from across B.C. to attend.

Students will spend three days at the Point Grey campus, where they will be introduced to UBC campus life and the study of forestry and natural resources at the Forest Sciences Centre. The second half of the camp will take participants to UBC's Malcolm Knapp Research Forest in Maple Ridge, where they will learn about the practical application of math and science in forestry and natural resource management.

The camp is sponsored by the Vancouver Foundation, the Council of Forest Industries, the Ministry of Community, Aboriginal and Women's Services and UBC Faculty of Forestry's First Nations Forestry Initiative.

Participants wanted for study on pregnancy and antidepressant medication

UBC researchers are looking for volunteers to form three study groups: healthy pregnant women, pregnant women who are taking an antidepressant, and women who have chosen not to take medication for depression during their pregnancy. The study will examine how much medication a mother passes on to her baby, infant behaviour and maternal mood.

Assoc. Prof. of Pediatrics Tim Oberlander, who is leading the study, is a practicing developmental pediatrician and child health researcher. The research will take place at Centre for Community Child Health, located at the BC Centre for Children's & Women's Health.

For more information, contact Victoria Nethercot, study co-ordinator at 604-875-2000, ext. 6992, or visit the Web site at www.cw.bc.ca/prenatalhealth/default.asp.
