UBC grads go to Ottawa as interns

UBC graduates Christina Komorski and Lee Wheeler are two of ten young Canadians who have been chosen this year to participate in the Parliamentary Internship Programme on Parliament Hill. Komorski, who was raised in New Westminster, will work with Nova Scotia MP Scott Brison during the first half of her internship, while Wheeler will work with Quebec MP Madeleine Dalphond-Guiral. The two will then work for MPs on the other side of the House of Commons in the second half.

Ms. Komorski completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science in 2001. Her studies focused on international relations and on environmental politics, culminating in an honours thesis discussing international cooperation and the climate change case. These studies led to environmental research and planning work at UBC's Campus Sustainability Office, and later at the Prem Center International School in Chiang Mai, Thailand. After completing the Parliamentary Internship Program, Ms. Komorski hopes to pursue a Master's degree in Political Science.

Lee Wheeler is from Calgary. He pursued studies at UBC in both the Department of Political Science and the Department of Psychology. He has been actively involved in several community initiatives and volunteer partnerships in Vancouver, including pioneering the University's Downtown-Eastside Initiative, providing recreational therapy at Dr. Peter's Centre, and establishing one-on-one partnerships with the Canadian Mental Health Association. In addition, he served as a community worker at Triage Emergency Services in the city's east end. Mr. Wheeler plans either to continue his graduate work in Europe or pursue legal studies in America, and he envisions an eventual career in international law.

Reverse roles to raise money for B.C. Children's Hospital

A women-only football game between the UBC’s female nurses and female students from rehab sciences will take place on Oct. 25, 12 – 1 pm at MacInnes Field.

The annual event, which also features a raffle and bake sale, kicks off Nursing Week. The highlight of the game will be male engineers and male rehab science students dressed in cheerleader drag cheering on their favourite female footballers.

All proceeds from the events go to the B.C. Children’s Hospital.

Family fun at UBC Farm pumpkin patch

From Oct. 12 – 31 the UBC Farm invites the community to come down and harvest their own Jack O'Lanterns and sugar pumpkins straight from the pumpkin patch. The patch is open every day except October 28, from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.

To further celebrate the “pumpkin season”, the Farm will also host a Great Pumpkin Festival, Oct. 26 from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m., there will be costumes, games, pumpkin goodies and the Mighty Scavenger Hunt.

The UBC Farm is located at 6182 South Campus Rd. To get to it, follow Wesbrook Mall past the lights at 16th Ave. Turn right on South Campus Road. For more information call 604.822.5092.
