Honour Roll

Diane Kristjansson is the new program leader, Applied Science, in Continuing Studies.

She will be responsible for developing new, lifelong learning programs for the engineering and architecture professions including a planned certificate in high-tech project management and technical writing and communications. Continuing Studies also plans to introduce learning initiatives in fuel-cell technology and earthquake engineering.

Kristjansson was previously program director, Continuing Education, at the University of Winnipeg.

UBC baseball team pitcher Jeff Francis has been named National Baseball Congress (NBC) Most Valuable Player for the 2001 season.

Francis played this past summer for the Anchorage Glacier Pilots of the Alaska Baseball League, leading his team to the NBC World Series championship title in Wichita, Kan. The third-year Physics student was the winning pitcher in three games of the championship tournament, including a 3-2 win in the final.

A native of North Delta, Francis joins a long list of major league players who were also NBC MVPs, including Lance Berkman, Kevin McReynolds, Chris Chambliss, and the legendary Satchel Paige.

Francis, who was also named a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics All American and Alaska Baseball League Player of the Year this year, left Wichita immediately after the NBC World Series for London, Ont. where he pitched for B.C. at the Canada Summer Games.

Former chief justice Allan McEachern has been appointed a Douglas McK. Brown Visiting Professor and Peter Wall Distinguished Fellow in the Faculty of Law. He will give special lectures and seminars, on topics including the area of advocacy.

A UBC alumnus, McEachern was one of the most renowned courtroom counsels in Canada when he was appointed chief justice of the Supreme Court of B.C. in 1979. He received an honorary Doctor of Laws from UBC in 1990.
